The origins of this song are hazy, it appears in John Meredith's 'Folk Songs of Australia' from 1968:
archive.org/details/folksongsofaustr0000unse

Meredith says that Duke Tritton learned it while busking in Sydney. This is repeated here:

There is also an indication here that Duke added a verse of his own, and that Jamie Carlin was a regular performer of the song (but didn't write it).
